I've been to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Mexico City, Tokyo... but never New York City. There is something wrong with this picture.
So, we're gonna do something about it. My friend Sarah is coming to visit in May, and we're planning on spending a day or two seeing the sights of NYC. I'm starting to get really excited!
So, I thought I'd ask you if you have any suggestions. For things to see? Things to do? Is the Statue of Liberty really over-rated? Places to stay cheaply? (Or is it worth heading back to Philly for the night rather than try to find a decent hostel?) Places to eat? Where in Chinatown to get really good dumplings? What day of the week we should be calling to check if tickets for Conan are available yet? Should we drive or take the train or bus?
Thanks in advance!

NY City is great, the bestest place to visit. The 2 Chelsea hostels are downtown, may be better for visiting around the village and NYU. The Amsterdam Ave Hostel has been around for a long time, upper West side near Columbia U., not as central to everything, but the NY City subways are great to get around on.

The best tip I have for visiting NYC is to get an all-day subway pass. It's cheap, easy to use, and there's always interesting people to look at!
I would call ASAP about Conan tickets - I think you can book them up to 6 months in advance. You probably won't be able to get in on a Friday show (they fill up first), but it's worth a try if that's your only available day. You can also arrive early on the same day and hope that there are standby tickets or that people don't show up last minute. (When we went with tickets, there was a seperate line of standby people.) Anyway, if you can, it's worth going - just for the warm-up guy alone. Hilarious!

And here's something that may also tempt you: you can get tickets to see The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in NYC. I totally want to do that sometime.

or, The Colbert Report, if you prefer:

As for other attractions, I'm not super familiar with NYC, but the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) is always worth a visit. It's huge and aside from the usual painting suspects they also have big Asian and Egyptian sections, including many artifacts and even structures.

the statue of liberty is very cool, but it takes a chunk of time out of a schedule that will most likely be packed to the brim. With the new security hurdles, it takes nearly 4 hours to do the entire trip out to the fort and back.
However, it is the statue of liberty, i mean come on. Its definitely worth a closer look at some point. And you really cant beat the view from the ferry.
